Obnoxious bitches piss me off. A girl in my discussion section today nearly made another girl cry today because she said “If you had bothered to read to the end of the excerpt, you would have reached X conclusion about scientists, as opposed to what the author says only halfway into the excerpt.” Immediately empathizing with the girl, I jumped in with: “Yes, but here the text discusses rationing scientists, and if you interpret ‘rationing’ to mean placing scientists in certain subcategories, you reach your conclusion. If you interpret it to mean placing scientists into completely different fields, you reach the other conclusion that the author had proposed. Since the author doesn’t specify, it’s up to your interpretation and your biases - the problems we discussed earlier.” Seriously, just because you know or think you know something doesn’t entitle you to abandoning all sense of tact or decorum. If you’re as educated as you think you are, you have a responsibility to be mature and explain yourself clearly. I’m having a similar problem in a Gender Studies class. Funny thing is, apparently a bunch of my Alpha Chi housemates have encountered her in other classes and we all have the same impression of her. Additionally, she has an annoying staccato laugh.
My Gender Studies professor singled me out after class today. She’s in charge of the Honors candidates for the senior thesis, and she told me that I was eligible and I’ve been on her list to contact. I told her that I wanted to do a thesis and I wanted to talk to her about it. We both delayed contacting each other because we saw that we would be spending an entire quarter together. Bottom line: she says that I would be the perfect candidate for a thesis. We’re meeting in a week and a half to discuss it. Note to self: talk to adviser.
This would mean that in the next six months alone I would have LSAT prep and testing, then starting law school apps and my thesis, in addition to being president and a long-distance girlfriend. But you know something? I’ve always been really involved in leadership, academics, and keeping the future in mind (college and in this case law school), so I’m down. There is no reason why I can’t do it all. I have my whole life to work, and I have flexibility with my schedule next year - I could easily take a lighter load two of my three academic quarters next year.
